 Hand sanitizer: Keeping
young children safe
Using alcohol-based hand sanitizer is now a habit for adults and children alike — and that’s good! Applied correctly, it kills many germs, including the virus that causes COVID-19. But did you know it can also be harmful?
Swallowing even a little hand sanitizer can cause alcohol poisoning in children. Not to mention, contact with the eyes can result in injury. To lower the risks, follow these steps:
• Always help children younger than age 6 apply hand sanitizer.
• Keep bottles out of a young child’s sight and reach. They shouldn’t be acces-
sible in cars, purses, diaper bags, backpacks, or clothing pockets.
• Be careful with automatic
dispensers. Many are eye-level or higher for small children, making it easy for aerosols or liquid to reach their eyes.
• Clean hands with soap and water whenever possible. Make hand sanitizer a second choice.
