Two new flu vaccines will be available this season for increased protection of people aged over 65. The vaccines are reported to generate a strong immune response in older Australians and are being made available in Australia for the first time this year. Here comes the best part – the vaccines
will be offered to more than three million Australians aged 65 years and over for free. The vaccines will be available through the National Immunisation Program following a recommendation from the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee.
In a joint release, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Minister for Health Greg Hunt, said these vaccines had been specifically designed for older people, as their immune systems were known to respond less effectively to vaccines.
“We must continue to do all we can to protect those Australians who are most at risk. Under the National Immunisation Program, those eligible for a free flu shot include people aged 65 years and over, pregnant women, most Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and those who suffer from chronic conditions,” the release stated.
“It can save the life of the person receiving the vaccine but, importantly, it also protects those who are unable to vaccinate due to health reasons.”
