AN UPSIDE TO HAVING SOME DOWN TIME
Everyone needs a break now and then, especially carers. Caring for another person is a rewarding experience, but it can also take a toll over time. It is imperative that all carers look after themselves, by taking some time out to rest and re-energise.
When someone has a disability, or starts getting
older, often their partner, family members or close friends step
in to provide support. ABS data released in 2015 reported there were almost 2.7 million unpaid carers across Australia, 856,100 of which were identi ed as primary carers.
Many carers put a lot of time into ensuring their partners, family members or friends are living the best life possible, but naturally over time, caring for someone else can be wearisome if people don’t take the time to care for themselves too.
According to Carers Victoria, carers are 40% more likely to suffer from a chronic health condition, and often experience broken sleep, leading to prolonged tiredness.
Taking breaks can often strengthen the relationship
between the carer and the person they are supporting, while also creating opportunities for the carer to experience new things during their down time.
Just Better Care’s in-home respite support gives carers time to rest and re-energise with peace of mind. Respite for a carer may mean taking a week off a few times a year for some time away, or a few hours each week to catch up on other activities.
Respite can be accessed on a regular or as needed basis, and can be enjoyed at home or out
in the community. You can relax knowing your loved one is still
receiving the support they need, while you take a much deserved
break.
Our in-home respite
support can include companionship and outings, preparing and serving meals, help around the home, personal care and grooming, shopping and errands, exible support and more.
