Their mission is to provide a tuition-free path to ensure Greenwood County students obtain the postsecondary education needed to develop a highly-skilled workforce, improve overall quality of life, and increase economic vitality.
• Phase 1: tuition assistance for students to obtain a certificate, diploma, or associates degree from Piedmont Technical College (PTC) or one of the other SC technical colleges if a particular major is not offered at PTC.
• Phase 2: includes Phase 1 plus the last two years of a postsecondary education at Lander University or another state-supported institution if the desired degree is not offered at Lander.
• Phase 3: includes Phase 1 and all four years of a bachelor’s degree.
The Greenwood Promise is set up as a Limited Liability Corporation (L.L.C.) with an allied 501 (c) 3 foundation focused on improving the workforce and the quality of life
of the Greenwood community. Specifically, The Greenwood Promise is an educational initiative aimed at increasing the economic growth of Greenwood County by promoting postsecondary education and thereby ensuring a skilled and educated workforce. This initiative enables Greenwood County to be a viable competitor in both industry and community
attractiveness by promising all eligible Greenwood County high school graduates tuition assistance. The program supports an Associate’s Degree and hopes to provide the opportunity for advancement to a four-year degree for those with the academic ability to succeed.   Lander University has been providing educational and cultural opportunities since its founding in 1872 as Williamston Female College, in Williamston, S.C. The college moved to Greenwood in 1904 and was renamed Lander in honor of
its founder, the Rev. Samuel Lander. It became part of the state system of higher education in 1973. Lander is now
a co-educational, state-assisted, comprehensive, regional, four-year university with traditional liberal arts and science programs, and professional programs in business, education and nursing. Lander has a rich history of serving the educational needs of a diverse student population, and with more than 60 areas of study, the university is a community where learning, energy and creativity flourish. In addition to a robust undergraduate curriculum, Lander offers a Master of Education in Teaching and Learning, Master of Education in Montessori Education, Master of Science in Nursing- Clinical Nurse Leader, and Master of Science in Emergency Management.
Founded in 1966 and accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, Piedmont Technical College is a comprehensive two-year college offering university-level education and hands-on career training. The college offers a wide variety of career studies programs that prepare students directly for the workforce, continuing education courses for personal and professional development, and a university transfer curriculum designed to fulfill the first two years of a bachelor's degree at four-year colleges and universities.
