Rex King photographed the general area north of Walnut Creek, along the route that the wagons took in
1916. Johnsen and Elson (1979) repeated his photo graphs in 1977, and we have again repeated selected photographsfromthiscollectionin1997(figs.23to28). BasedontheKingphotographs,junipershaveincreased ontheridgesthroughthisarea.Theflatterareasnorth
of Walnut Creek show an interesting transition from relatively shrub-free in 1916 to stands of unknown shrub species and cactus in 1977, then back to a shrub- free condition by 1997. Johnsen and Elson noted the dominantvegetationherein1977wasmadeupofblue grama,sanddropseed,groundsel,vinemesquite,and someUtahjuniper.
