During July and August the thunderstorm activity in New Mexico rivals that of the Florida center of activity. It has been this way for a long time. The chart above is from a report entitled “The Distribution of Thunderstorms in the United States” by William H. Alexander, Monthly Weather Review, July 1924. When such thunderstorms result in “dry strikes” (lightening without rain) then fires can be significant, especially early in the fire season.
