Investments into Ukrainian agriculture increased by 40% y/y, for the marketing year that ended June 30, according to the annual directory, ‘Agribusiness of Ukraine 2017-2018,’ prepared by Top Lead marketing agency. “Companies invest in fixed assets, buying tractors, combines, and seeders. Business is developing. The next step is the processing -- the transition from the raw materials market to the creation of added value and access to foreign markets,” said Stanislav Shum, Top Lead CEO and an author of the report.
Nibulon is investing $19mn to build its third Dnipro River terminal in Zaporizhia, a grain rich region . Scheduled for completion in June, construction involves 1.8 km of dredging on the Plos’ka Osokorivka River and building a 3 km berth, Interfax-Ukraine reports. Nibulon has 11 river terminals on the Dnipro and the Southern Bug, a fleet of 67 barges and tugboats, and a shipbuilding plant and a major grain shipping terminal in the Black Sea port terminal of Mykolayiv.
Of 57 regulations applied to milk production in Ukraine, 16 are irrelevant and 5 are illegal , according to a study by the EU-funded Better Regulation Delivery Office. In addition, the Office reports: “Most of 17 regulatory instruments have high corruption risks due to undefined and non-transparent procedures.” The Office has posted on line a new, 70-page, Ukrainian language report: “Milk Market Regulation.”
MV Cargo is assembling a high volume grain loader at Cargill’s massive new terminal at the Black Sea port of Yuzhny . When completed this fall, the terminal will be able to store 290,000 tons of grain and to transship 10% of all grain exported by Ukraine. The 15 meter depth of the berth “will allow us to accept large-tonnage vessels, and modern equipment – to load a ship like Post-Panamax in two or three days,” MV Cargo says in a press release. By comparison, the new Istanbul Channel is to have an average depth of 25m. Scheduled for completion in five years, this channel, linking the Black Sea and the Mediterranean, will be able to handle Post-Panamax vessels, ships capable of carrying 13,000 containers or 120,000 tons of cargo.
Ukraine threshed 41.6mn tonnes of grain and leguminous crops from an area of 11.2mn hectares (76% of the forecast) with the yield of 3.71 tonnes per ha as of October 2, Ukraine's Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food has said on its website. The harvest of early grains and leguminous crops amounted to 34.3mn tonnes from an area of 9.9mn hectares with a yield of 3.48 tonnes per hectare. Some 6.8mn tonnes of maize was threshed from 1.1mn hectares (25%) with the yield of 5.92 tonnes per hectare, some 108,000 tonnes of buckwheat was harvested from 87,000 hectares (80%) with a yield of 1.25 tonnes per hectare, and the total harvest of millet was 66,000 tonnes gathered from 43,000 hectares (82%) with a yield of 1.54 tonnes per hectare. In addition, 9.4mn tonnes of sunflower seeds were harvested from 4.3mn hectares with a yield of 2.16 tonnes per hectare and 2mn tonnes of soybean from 816,000 hectares with a yield of 2.49 tonnes per hectare. Some 2.7mn tonnes of rapeseeds were threshed from 1mn hectares with a yield of 2.61 tonnes per hectare. A total of 3.2mn tonnes of sugar beets were dug from 67,000 ha (24%) with a yield of 48 tonnes per ha.
