Russian Rosneft got extra $0.5bn for bailing out "church bank"
The Russian Bank of Regional Development (VBRR) controlled by Russia's largest state oil company Rosneft received additional fund- ing of RUB30bn ($0.5bn) for bailing out the troubled "church bank" Peresvet, Reuters said on March 14 citing unnamed market sources.
Previous reports showed that VBRR together with Peresvet have breached the capital adequacy ratios as of end of 2017.
The first-tier and base capital adequacy ratios dropped to 0%, below the mandatory minimums of 4.5% and 6% respectively. VBRR in June 2017 took over the Peresvet Bank, previously controlled by the Russian Orthodox Church.
Now Reuters claimed that also VBRR and Deposit Insurance Agency reports confirm that the bank received more than the initial RUB67bn to rescue Peresvet, getting total support of RUB100bn.
Romania’s central bank has reportedly rejected the request filed by Hungarian banking group OTP to take over Banca Romaneasca, the local subsidiary of the National Bank of Greece (NBG), Romanian media reported on March 14.
Various explanations have been put forward as regards the causes of the decision, but all of them converge towards the central bank’s doubts in regard to OTP’s financial strength, even though the Hun- garian lender announced last October that it had earmarked $1bn for takeovers in the region.
The Romanian subsidiary of Hungary’s OTP announced on July 27 that NBG had signed an agreement with OTP Bank Romania on the sale of its 99.28% holding in Banca Romaneasca.
Danske Bank will present findings of a probe into alleged money laundering at its branch in Estonia by September, the bank said on March 13.
The bank is under an investigation by Estonia’s Financial Supervi- sion Authority (FSA) after the Danish and UK media made allega- tions in late February that the bank’s branch in Estonia was involved in money laundering.
“The board of directors takes it very seriously that historically we were not good enough at preventing money laundering at our branch in Estonia,” Danske Bank’s chairman Ole Andersen said in a statement.
