GASUM has opened the largest LNG terminal in the Nordic area, the company announced on June 11. e Roytta facility, in Tornio, can unload ships at 3,000 cubic metres per hour and hold 50,000 cubic metres in storage, Wartsila has said. e builder provided engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) work.
Gasum explained the new Finnish terminal was intended to provide a low emission fuel for local industry and vessels, in addition to improv- ing security of supply in the region.
e Tornio terminal was a “ground-breaking collaboration between several companies and its opening is a long-awaited milestone for all of us. e deployment of the new LNG terminal signi cantly supports the emission goals of Fin- land, as well as the entire Nordics,” said Gasum’s vice president, Kimmo Rakhamo. Using LNG will allow the “industry of northern Finland [to remain] competitive by o ering energy that has low emissions and is a ordable to the needs of di erent operators”.
e terminal was backed by the Manga LNG joint venture, which includes the outokumpu and SSAB steel companies, EPV Energy and Gasum. Wartsila was the main contractor. e site has rail and truck links.
Manga LNG’s CEo, Mika Kolehmainen, said that the only other terminal in Finland was in Pori, 600 km away. “ e Tornio terminal is
equipped with bunkering stations for LNG ves- sels, regasi cation equipment for [LNG], as well as a storage unit that is 50,000 cubic metres in volume.” one source of supplies for the facility is Novatek’s Vysotsk plant, which was formally launched in April.
“ is project demonstrates our know-how on gas technology and gas as fuel as well as our expertise in medium-scale LNG distribution,” said Wartsila’s vice president, Antti Kami.
Gasum’s Rakhamo said the infrastructure could be used in future with liquefied biogas (LBG), “which will further reduce emissions”.
Wartsila had intended to commission the plant in early 2018. Reuters reported a company o cial as saying there had been a need for pro- longed testing, without providing further details. Wartsila is also providing 10 years of service and maintenance for the plant.
Novatek stacks up Chinese deals

NoVATEK has signed a slew of deals with Chi- nese companies during the St Petersburg Inter- national Economic Forum (SPIEF). It sealed share purchase agreements with CNooC Ltd and China National Petroleum Corp. (CNPC), noting these sales were expected to close “in the nearest future”, Novatek said on June 7.
Both Chinese companies are buying 10% stakes in the Arctic LNG 2 project. e sales require approval from both the Russian and Chinese governments.
e same day, Novatek announced an agree- ment on the Maritime Arctic Transport (MArT) company, with China CoSCo Shipping, Sovcom ot and the Silk Road Fund (SRF).
is deal is intended to establish a partner- ship to develop, nance and implement a year- round arrangement to ship gas from Russia’s Arctic into the Asia Paci c. It will also aim to oversee shipping, via the Northern Sea Route, between Asia and Western Europe.
Novatek’s chairman, Leonid Mikhelson, said this was an “important milestone in developing
the transportation of LNG produced by our Arctic projects along the Northern Sea Route”. MArT will transform the Northern Sea Route into a “global and commercially e ective trans- portation corridor between the Pacific and Atlantic basins, as well as in the implementation of the decision made by the leadership of the Russian Federation to increase Northern Sea Route annual cargo tra c to 80 million tonnes in 2024”.
on June 5, Novatek announced it had signed a heads of agreement (HoA), with Sinopec and Gazprombank, on establishing a joint venture to sell LNG and gas in China. is move, Mikhel- son said, will allow it to sell LNG produced but also invest in the “end-customer segment”.
Arctic LNG 2 is widely expected to reach a nal investment decision (FId) this year. In May, a contract for engineering, procurement, supply, construction and commissioning on the plant was signed with TechnipFMC. e plant will have 19.8 million tpy of capacity, with the rst train launched in 2023.
