Through September, Ukraine’s steel production is up by 6.3% yoy, to 16.3 million tons, and pig iron production is up by 6.4%, to 16.1 million tons, reports UkrMetalurgProm. Ferroalloy production increased by 8%, to 587,000 tons. Working to meet world demand, steelmakers had these facilities open in mid-September: 19 out of 21 blast furnaces; 7 out of 8 open-hearth furnaces; 14 out of 16 converters; 5 out of 15 electric-arc furnace and 16 out of 17 continuous casting machines.
By shifting from gas to coal, the country has been unable to start the winter season with a planned coal stockpile of 1 million tons, the Minister said. Instead of growing, the nation’s coal stockpiles shrank by 8% during the first week in October, falling to 713,000 tons. The winter heating season starts today in Lviv. With China scouring the world for coal, world prices have hit a record $300 a ton. Ukraine plans to import 600,000 tons by the end of this year.
Ukraine’s coal production has fallen steadily, hitting 29 million metric tons last year, Coal Age writes on Ukraine’s coal mining outlook. Of Ukraine’s 145 coal mines, almost half are in the Russia-controlled portion of the Donbas.
