China’s Huawei mulls cooperation with Serbia on developing 5G network
China-based provider of information and communications technology Huawei has proposed to the Serbian government a possible cooperation on establishing 5G network in the country, the Serbian finance ministry announced on August 21.
This was announced after Serbia’s Finance Minister Sinisa Mali met Huawei representatives to discuss long-term cooperation in the implementation of joint projects, as part of the Belt and Road initiative (BRI). BRI is a strategy adopted by the Chinese government involving infrastructure development and investments involving 152 countries and international organisations.
The cooperation between Huawei and Serbia could be expanded by establishing the Government Cloud system, which would integrate data and communication infrastructure of all government agencies and offer all applications needed by government agencies for their businesses, the ministry said.
Huawei is also Serbia's partner in developing the Safe and Smart City system.
Further development of the Smart Cities Strategy is planned through the positioning of Huawei as a strategic partner for cities and local governments in Serbia.
The exchange of information will provide
a platform for the development of local ecosystems in the field of digital transformation in the public, financial, educational, energy and transport sectors, all of which should lead to significant savings, which is one of the benefits of the Smart Cities concept, the ministry added.
One of the main goals of the future cooperation between Serbia and China is the opening of the Huawei Innovation Digital Transformation Center as a regional centre for the Western Balkans, based in Belgrade.
