Springfield Energy reportedly makes big oil find offshore Ghana
GHANA
SPRINGFIELD Energy, an independent Ghanaian company, has reportedly discov- ered reserves of crude oil at an offshore licence area known as West Cape Three Points Block 2 (WCTP Block 2).
Ghanaian press sources said earlier this week that Springfield Energy had found up to 1.2bn barrels of oil in place (OIP), along with commercially viable reserves of natural gas, in Afina-1x, the first well drilled at the block. The company expects to be able to recover about 30-35% of the oil reserves, they stated.
Local media also claimed that Springfield Energy had been ready to make an announce- ment last week but had decided at the last min- ute to wait.
The company has not confirmed any of these reports, but it did inform Offshore Energy Today that it intended to unveil its find in the near future.
Kevin Okyere, the CEO of Springfield Ener- gy’s parent company, described the find as “great news for Springfield, Ghana and Africa.” He added: “We are excited about the discovery, as it ties into our vision of becoming a leading African upstream player with a global focus. This for us means increased opportunities to impact the lives of our people positively with
the resources.”
Springfield has been using the Stena Forth,
a drillship owned by Stena Drilling, to sink two wells at WCTP Block 2. It spudded Afina-1x, the first of the two, in October at an offshore site located in 1,030-metre-deep water. It drilled the well to a total depth of 4,082 metres and encountered 65 metres of oil, including 50 metres of light crude pay, in Cenomanian strata.
The well also reached Springfield Energy’s secondary target in the Turonian layer. In this layer, it encountered 10 metres of gas- and light oil-bearing sands.
Afina-1x and the second well, Oak-1x, are the first deepwater wells to be drilled by an independent company in Ghana’s offshore zone. If the discovery at WCTP Block 2 is con- firmed, it will represent the biggest find ever made in the country. Ghana’s largest confirmed field is Jubilee, which also lies in the offshore zone.
Springfield Energy holds an 84% stake in WCTP Block 2. The remaining equity in the licence area is split between state-owned Ghana National Petroleum Co. (GNPC) and its explo- ration arm, GNPC Exploration and Production Co. (Explorco).
