is thought to hold recoverable reserves of around 400mn barrels of oil.
Dehghan added that output from Aban and West Paydar would grow by around 12,000 bpd, with a consortium of Russian firms involved in work there.
Meanwhile, output from the larger Azade- gan and Yadavaran fields, where Chinese firms CNPC and Yadavaran remain active, would also increase, though the NIOC director did not pro- vide a figure for Azadegan, but estimated growth of around 10,000 at Yadavaran.
he noted that the development of Azade- gan, which is the Iranian segment of the giant reservoir known on the Iraqi side as Majnoon (Insane), owing to its large size, would con- tinue to be carried out by CNPC in the north- ern section (North Azadegan), while local firm Arvandan Oil & Gas Co. would take over South Azadegan.
Oilfield developments in the area have strug- gled to realise their massive potential because of low recovery rates. North and South Azadegan are key fields in the West Karoun oilfield cluster, which also includes North Yaran, South Yaran, and Yadavaran.
Together, the group are estimated to con- tain at least 67bn barrels of oil in place, but the average recovery rate across West Karoun is just 5-6%.
Output at Yadavaran is now around 120,000 bpd. The second phase entails the drilling of 105 wells to achieve 180,000 bpd, with Phase 3 tar- geting output of 300,000 bpd.
Under the operatorship of the Petroleum
Engineering and Development Co. (PEDEC), South Azadegan is currently producing 110,000 bpd, which will be expanded to 320,000 bpd once infrastructure improvements are complete.
In May, the National Iranian Drilling Co. (NIDC) said that it had begun drilling 10 new wells at South Azadegan. Middle East Oil & Gas (MEOG) understands that another 25 wells are also scheduled to be drilled, with programme seen adding 40,000-50,000 bpd to output.
