Uzbekistan to mass produce Hyundai electric vehicles
Uzbekistan intends to launch mass production of Hyundai electric vehicles by 2023 in the Kokand free economic zone (FEZ).
Construction works on a new $300mn plant with a capacity of 10,000 units are scheduled to start in 2023. The project is in line with the Uzbek government’s plans to ramp up exports of vehicles and car parts in upcoming years. Uzbekistan produced over 59,500 passenger vehicles in the first quarter of 2019, up by 51.4% compared to the same period of 2018, according to official Uzbek data.
The project will be a joint venture between Hyundai, Evergreen Motors and the Uzbek government.
Hyundai is currently working on another Uzbekistan project, the Hyundai-Namangan KD plant in Turakurgan district of Namangan Region. The plant is to begin producing 400 trucks, minibuses and buses annually starting from September. The capacity of the plant will eventually rise to 2,500 vehicles.
