2.5 The myth of the younger son-in-law’s drones
Story: Erdogan’s younger son-in-law invented cheap drones and he changed the history of war.
Simple logic is enough to pose the question of how an assembler can produce goods at prices cheaper than those who sell him parts.
The son-in-law drone story never seems to get to the point that these drones are sold via debt provided by the Turkish government. So, these drones are not only cheap, they are actually costless. Or is that the buying of the drones brings other benefits from the Turkish government.
Erdogan is personally working as a drones salesman. No money is needed for payment. He provides debt. During his recent trip across much of Africa, he talked of little else but drones.
The myth of the son-in-law’s drones began with the Nagorno-Karabakh war, when the whole planet, including Russia, Europe and the US turned a blind eye to the Azerbaijani offensive that resulted in the regaining of some parts of its soil that were under the occupation of Armenia from 1994.
While all states were issuing “concerns” about Azerbaijan’s offensive, the discourse on “Turkey’s game-changing drones” was produced to explain how Azerbaijan won the battle against Armenia, although all the ‘big brothers’ were pursuing big PR operations, propagandising that they were against Azerbaijan’s offensive.
Now, Ukraine is encouraged by the Western media to attack Russian-backed separatists in Donbas with drones produced by Erdogan’s son-in-law.
The media’s role, it seems, is not chasing up the truth but properly identifying the message coming from the skies and reproducing it.
No shame is felt while arguing that Ukraine is now in a stronger position to attack the separatists thanks to the son-in-law’s drones.
If the aim is to produce a reason for the Russians to invade Donbas following Crimea, encouraging Ukraine to attack Russians with the son-in-law’s drones will definitely help.
The media played its role while the Russians invaded Abkhazia and South Ossetia in Georgia in 2008, as well as Crimea in Ukraine in 2014.
Let’s get serious: the son-in-law’s drones are definitely not game-changers. This is just one of those stories produced by those who produce all the arguments in the IR (international relations) coverage of the Western media.
