Mozambique LNG under
quarantine as COVID-19
cases identified
The Total-led Mozambique LNG project in Cabo Delgado Province is under quarantine after being linked to two-thirds of the country’s cases, which reached 28 on April 14, when the news was announced. Cases had reached 31 by April 16, and testing and contact tracing is ongoing.
Seven new cases announced on April 13 were all connected to the project.
Total said in a statement that it had “business continuity plans in place to ensure the impact to the project of an event like this is mitigated as much as possible”. The company added: “We are focused on critical activity including security, logistics and forward planning.”

Night-time vibratory piling at Materials Offloading FacilitybeginsweekofApril 13
Work is well underway to construct the
LNG Canada Project Materials Offloading Facility (MOF), which is located between Rio Tinto’s Terminal B and the former Methanex causeway. As part of this work, piling has been occurring between 7am and 10pm – seven days per week – since late November 2019.
Starting as early as April 14, the contractor responsible for this work will begin 24/7 piling for installation of sheet piles. This is needed to meet critical schedule requirements. The piles will be installed using a vibratory-hammer, which produces significantly less noise than the traditional impact hammer. An impact hammer will not be used during night piling operations.
Public impacts are expected to be minimal. Our recently completed noise monitoring showed the expected increase of noise from night piling to be less than one decibel (dB) at Kitimaat Village and 1.5 kilometres away. A normal conversation is typically measured at 60-65dB from three feet away.
Night piling is required and expected for six to eight weeks. All permits as well as safety
and environmental plans are in place.
Once complete, the MOF will be used to
unload the LNG processing modules, which will start being delivered to site via marine transport in summer 2021.

Pertamina reportedly
reissues tender for two US
LNG cargoes
Indonesia’s Pertamina has re-issued a tender for two LNG cargoes loading in the US in June, Reuters reported, citing three industry sources familiar with the matter.
Pertamina had originally offered the cargoes on a free-on-board (FOB) basis from Cheniere Energy’s Corpus Christi liquefaction terminal on the Texas Gulf Coast earlier in April, according to the sources. However,
one of the sources said the tender had been cancelled when it failed to attract enough bids. The new tender is due to close on June 16, according to one of the other sources.
ABB to power South Asia’s firstLNGhybridtugfor efficient and sustainable operations
ABB’s electric propulsion, power, energy storage, control and automation technology will be at the heart of the first tug in South Asia capable of switching between low emission liquefied natural gas (LNG) engines and zero-emission battery power. The tug, which will operate in Singapore harbour, has been ordered by Sembcorp Marine subsidiary Jurong Marine Services for delivery from
the Sembcorp Marine shipyard by the end of 2020.
LNG as a fuel virtually eliminates
sulphur oxide emissions, while the Maritime Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) is
also incentivising its use to support the International Maritime Organization’s aims to halve ship CO2 emissions by 2050.
The project represents the first delivery of ABB’s award-winning power and distribution system Onboard DC GridTM for a tug application. Leveraging Onboard DC GridTM, the vessel will be able to deploy 904 kWh of battery power for zero-emission operation,
as well as for peak shaving – improving utilization of electricity use on board.
“This is a breakthrough in the tug market for the ABB’s energy storage technologies and a strong validation of Onboard DC GridTM as the ultimate solution for power management efficiency for hybrid propulsion,” says Juha Koskela, managing director, ABB Marine & Ports. “Future-proofing for a different energy mix makes particular sense for tugs and other port service vessels, as the most likely candidates to face imminent environmental restriction. This is also a great example of
a local team meeting a regional priority by realizing ABB’s ‘Electric. Digital. Connected.’ vision.”
Gas-fuelled engines face a particular challenge when it comes to handling the fast- changing load capabilities demanded by tugs. Leveraging the Onboard DC GridTM system, the tug’s engines will be able to run at variable speeds for optimised LNG fuel economy at each load level.

$10mn partnership between EMA and Keppel Offshore & Marine to spark innovative energy solutions in marine sector
The energy sector is calling for innovative energy solutions in the marine sector for the adoption of cleaner energy and greater environmental sustainability. The Energy Market Authority (EMA) and Keppel Offshore & Marine (Keppel O&M) have forged a $10mn partnership and signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to develop energy solutions in the areas of distributed energy resources, digitalisation and emerging low carbon alternatives.
As part of this MOU, EMA and Keppel O&M are launching a grant call for solutions relating to energy storage systems and smart power grids for the offshore and marine environment. These solutions should seek
to reduce overall energy usage and carbon footprint while enhancing overall operational efficiency. The grant call serves to encourage innovation and capability building for the wider industry ecosystem in Singapore. The insights derived from the grant call could be translated to potential solutions to enhance the grid.
The grant call is open for applications and will close on 12pm, June 24, 2020. Interested companies, research institutes and institutes
