2.3 Germany disburses €3mn grant to Georgia to support families affected by pandemic
Germany has signed a €3mn grant to Georgia for the support of vulnerable families in the country affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
A grant agreement was signed on November 30 between Georgian Finance Minister Lasha Khutsishvili and the German Development Bank’s (KfW) South Caucasus Office Director Birgit Holderied-Kress.
The grant is part of the COVID-19 Emergency Support from Germany 2020, which included a €5.8mn grant and a €15mn subsidised loan. The purpose of the assistance is to alleviate economic consequences for Georgian families who lost their income due to the pandemic.
“With the increased grant amount it is expected to finance more than 135,000 social security payments to vulnerable households...This support will not only contribute to the social protection of countless families but also to the strengthening of the social security system itself,” the German embassy in Georgia reports.
The embassy also says that “the loan amount provided in 2020 allowed the financing of more than 280,000 unemployment assistance payments to eligible beneficiaries.”
