7.1.1 Earnings
    The combined net income of Turkish banks increased by 13% y/y to Turkish lira (TRY) 48.5bn (€4.4bn) in January-August.
Interest income banks collected on consumer credits grew 36% y/y to TRY269bn while interest from credit cards leapt 100% y/y to TRY6.7bn. Interest awarded to deposits jumped 115% y/y to TRY70.7bn. Lenders’ net interest income declined 10% y/y to 148bn in January-August.
BDDK also reported that assets of local banks grew by 11.4% from end-2020 to TRY6.8trn as of end-August while loans increased 9.3% over the same period to stand at TRY3.9trn.
There were 53 banks operating in Turkey as of end-August. The number of domestic branches declined to 11,080 from 11,213, while the number of employees in the banking sector dropped to 200,900 from 202,000.
