Turkey imported 5.82bn cubic metres (bcm) of natural gas in March, marking a 48% y/y increase.
The country’s total gas consumption rose by 42% to 6.54 bcm from 4.6 bcm in March 2020.
Households’ consumption expanded by 43% to 2.83 bcm, while the use of gas in power plants jumped 248% to 1.36 bcm in the month.
Imports from Russia amounted to 2.58 bcm, up 563% y/y, while Turkey purchased 1.07 bcm of natural gas from Azerbaijan and 850 mcm from Iran.
Consumption growth in natural gas power plants increased as the plants were required to generate more electricity due to drought pushing down hydro capacity over the past few months, state-run news service Anadolu said.

In January-May, Turkey’s international air passenger tally was down 23% y/y to 11mn people while the domestic passenger total fell 5% y/y to 19mn.
Turkey’s house price index increased by 32% y/y in April.
Overall starch-based sugar (SBS) sales by local producers in Turkey amounted to 525,972 tonnes in 2019, according to Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK).
A total of 260,624 tonnes of SBS was exported, while Turkey's annual SBS consumption quota stood at 67,500 tonnes. Thus 197,848 tonnes are "missing".
The number of mobile phone internet subscribers in Turkey rose from 64.5mn at end-September to 65.1mn at end-2020 while the number of mobile phone subscribers edged down from 82.8mn to 82.1mn.
Energy Exchange Istanbul (EPIAS) on June 1 launched its Electricity Futures Market (VEP). The first ever physical over-the-counter (OTC) deal was cleared for the July ’21 contract at TL427/MWh, with a volume of 3MW. On October 1, EPIAS will launch its Natural Gas Futures Market (VGP).
