Ericsson launches 5G and IoT research lab in Turkey
“While consumer IoT accounts for the majority
of IoT connections (68% in 2017), the biggest increase is expected in industrial IoT; it will reach 48% of total IoT connections by 2025. This will be driven by increased interest in smart cities and smart utilities. IoT revenue meanwhile will reach almost $26 billion by 2025 (up from $5 billion
in 2017), driven by applications, platforms and services – the largest source of revenue – growing from 53% of total IoT revenue in 2017 to 62% in 2025.”
Information technologies company Ericsson opened a research laboratory in Istanbul on December 4 for the development of global indus- try technologies within 10 years, state-run news agency Anadolu reported.
The tech giant launched the facility in cooperation with the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK). At the laboratory, scientists are to develop technologies for 5G and Internet of Things (IoT) purposes.
“Our main goal is to make Turkey a base of research and development and production,” said Mehmet Fatih Kacir, a deputy minister of Turkey's Industry and
Technology Ministry at the inauguration ceremony.
Kacir noted that Ericsson already has research centres with 450 personnel in total in Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir.
Rafiah Ibrahim, Ericsson's senior vice president, said that this was the company's 11th laboratory worldwide.
"We have been in Turkey for 120 years, and we want to continue our investments in Turkey," she said, adding that the laboratory would have huge potential, with 1.5bn people expected to be using 5G globally by 2024.
