4.4.2 Nominal wages dynamics
Real wages in Ukraine increased 6.0% y/y in August, accelerating from 5.1% y/y growth in July, the State Statistics Service reported on September 28. The average monthly nominal wage amounted to UAH11,446 a month ($416), declining from UAH11,804 in July, or 3.0% m/m in real terms.
Wages are very uneven with banking and IT jobs commanding salaries of just under UAH20,000 ($700) a month against the national average of UAH11,446. Still, even a salary of $700 is not enough to make Ukraine competitive in the IT employment market in eastern Europe. Ukraine cant compete with Poland or Russia where wages are up to four times higher.
The leading regions for average monthly wages were the city of Kyiv (UAH16,795), Ukrainian-controlled Donetsk (UAH12,660) and Kyiv region (UAH11,803). The largest nominal average wage increase was in “other services” (27.3% y/y), medicine and social services (20.1% y/y), and arts, sports and recreation (19.5% y/y).
Within the industrial sector, the highest growth of nominal wages was in electricity and gas supply (22.6% y/y), water supply (15.9% y/y), and wood, paper and polygraphy production (9.4% y/y).
Wages continue to accelerate, implying that Ukraine’s labor market is in
