4.4.3 Retail sector dynamics
Turkey’s calendar-adjusted retail sales volume index fell 4.3% on an annual basis in August, data from national statistics authority TUIK has shown.
Non-food (except automotive fuel) goods sales dropped 5.8% y/y while food, drinks and tobacco sales dropped by 5% in August, according to the data.
Electronic goods and furniture sales nosedived 20.7% on an annual basis. Sales of medical goods and cosmetics fell by 4.1% and computers, books, and telecommunications equipment sales dropped by 3.7% year-on-year in the month.
The latest GDP data showed that households’ final consumption declined 1.1% in the second quarter of this year after plunging 4.8% y/y in the previous quarter. In the final quarter of 2018, households’ consumption plunged as much as 7.7% on an annual basis.
TUIK also reported on October 14 that the calendar adjusted total turnover index—for the industry, construction, trade and services sectors—rose by 2.8% in August from a year ago.
