Hyosung, KEPCO seal big data deal
SOUTH KOREA
SOUTH Korea’s Hyosung Heavy Industries and state-run utility Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO) will harness smart technology and big data in a bid to reduce power cuts and slash networks costs.
The two companies signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) this week to utilise Hyosung’s asset management system (AMS) and KEPCO’s big data to strengthen a power equipment maintenance system and develop next-generation power facilities, including unmanned substations.
Hyosung Heavy said its AMS would reduce the power facility failure rate by up to 80% and cut maintenance cost by 30%. The company developed the AMS system for the first time in the country and commercialised it last year.
KEPCO is seeking to increase network effi- ciency and to cut costs in a bit to keep tariff growth down. The utility must also contend with rising demand in summer as air conditioning demand rises. Improving network management and resilience is key to addressing these issues.
The system has been used by various domes- tic companies such as SK Energy, Posco’s Pohang steel plant and Electricidade de Mozambique, Mozambique’s state-owned energy firm.
“Hyosung aims to grow as a total power solution provider in the next-generation elec- tricity market by incorporating big data-based information technologies into Hyosung’s power equipment manufacturing technology,” Hyo- sung Group chairman Cho Hyun-joon said.
In summer 2019, KEPCO agreed to govern- ment demands to subsidise power tariffs in a bid to cut residential power bills by up to 18%.
The government’s initiative came after an angry public response to high power bills in sum- mer 2018, when soaring temperatures increased the use of air conditioning. This pushed many households into the higher tariff bracket, thereby raising their bills. In 2018, the government low- ered residential electricity prices by 19.5% on average per household after consumers com- plained of high tariffs and the complex nature of the progressive tariff system.

L&T wins transmission
orders in India and
overseas
Engineering major Larsen & Toubro (L&T) said on December 4 it had bagged various orders across different business segments in both domestic and international markets.
The construction arm of L&T has secured orders from clients across various states for its varied businesses, the company said in a filing to the BSE.
L&T’s power transmission and distribution business has bagged various orders in India and overseas.
“In Maharashtra, an empanelment and rate contract has been awarded to provide off-grid DC solar photovoltaic water pumping systems with standalone lighting systems for farmers in the Aurangabad, Nashik and Pune revenue divisions,” the company said.
These systems will have provision for mobile charging, transfer of automated meter reading and water discharge reading data.

works from one of the government utilities. Additional orders have been won in
ongoing projects in the Middle East, the company said.
L&T said it has also secured a major add- on order from an existing client in Qatar for an expressway.
“Additionally, various add-on orders have been received by some existing projects
in the Water and Effluent Treatment and Metallurgical and Material Handling businesses,” it said.

Siemens supplies digital twin for India coal plant
A coal-fired power plant is to be equipped with advanced digital solutions by Siemens. The German energy company will install
a complete thermal twin for the plant in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, which is owned by Lalitpur Power Generation Company Limited (LPGCL), part of the Bajaj Group.
Siemens will provide remote performance monitoring and diagnostics from the recently launched Siemens MindSphere Application
Center in Gurgaon.
The thermal twin utilises thermodynamic
analysis and machine learning to allow power plant operators to diagnose performance gaps for every asset in the cycle in real time and then provides recommendations for improving efficiency.
Siemens says this “co-creation approach will assist the plant team in identifying and rectifying performance gaps in a timely manner”.
Bajaj Power Ventures managing director
R S Sharma said the digital solutions “are aimed at improving power plant performance and optimising operations. The solutions, once executed, will result in sustainable and efficient power generation.”
Laura Anderson, head of Siemens Gas & Power Services’ Controls and Digitalisation unit, said the company’s digital products and solutions “are providing customers in India and around the world with the tools to navigate changing market requirements and meet their operational goals. Close collaboration from inside our MindSphere Application Centers enables us to work together with our customers to fully realise the value behind their data.”
