Immigrant flow to Russia from the EEU up three-fold in 2021. As the coronacrisis abates migrants from Russia’s hinterland in the Eurasia Economic Union (EEU) was up three-fold as workers from the poorer nations return to Russia seeking work, director of labour migration and social security department of the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) Altynai Omurbekova told TASS on December 3. The EEC did not specify which economic spheres of activity the migrants were returning to, but an army of workers, mostly from Central Asia, have traditionally made up a large proportion of low paid labour in things like construction, retail and taxi drivers. The numbers of migrant labour arriving in Russia in 2020 collapsed to its lowest levels in a decade during the worst of the epidemic as borders were closed and a ruble devaluation dramatically reduced earnings in dollar terms; most migrants send their wages home in dollars.
