The stabilization of imports was mainly due to the reversal of growth in imports of machinery, equipment and transport equipment. They account for about half of Russia's imports of goods. In contrast, the value of imports of foodstuffs, and in particular chemical products, continued to grow quite rapidly in July-September compared with previous months, partly driven by higher import prices. Chemical products accounted for 18% and 12% of food imports this year.
In January-September, Russia's merchandise exports were worth $340bn. Of this, 38% went to EU countries, 14% to China, 9% to Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) countries and 4% to the United States. The value of goods imports was $220bn. The EU accounted for 33% of imports, China for 24%, the EAEU for 8% and the United States for 6%.
