China to help Kenya pick NPP location
China National Nuclear Corp. (CNNC) is helping Kenya’s Nuclear Power and Energy Agency (NuPEA) to identify potential sites for hosting the rst nuclear power plant (NPP) in the African country.
e Indian Ocean, Lake Victoria and Lake Turkana have been identi ed as the most optimal sites for the establishment of the NPP according to local media.
“Currently, we have zeroed in at the coast along the Indian Ocean, Lake Victoria and Lake Turkana as the most ideal sites. We have excluded the Ri Valley because we need enough water to cool the plant,” the NuPEA’s CEO, Collins Juma, said.
Kenya is aiming to build an NPP with
a capacity of 1,000 MW, by 2027 as it takes steps to diversify its energy mix. e country currently produces 35% of its energy from hydropower and the remainder from geothermal, wind and diesel sources.
