2.4 Afghanistan’s Taliban government wins backing from 10 regional powers for UN donor conference
Afghanistan’s Taliban-run government won backing from 10 regional powers at Moscow talks for the idea of a United Nations donor conference in order to help Afghanistan avoid an humanitarian catastrophe and an economic collapse.
Russia, China, India, Pakistan and Iran along with Central Asian nations Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan joined the Taliban on October 20 in calling for the UN to convene a conference as soon as possible to help rebuild the country.
The parties said the conference should take place “with the understanding, of course, that the main burden ... should be borne by the forces whose military contingents have been present in this country over the past 20 years”, referring to the US and its allies who invaded Afghanistan after the 11 September 2001 attacks.
The abrupt pullout of US forces in the summer paved the way for the Taliban's rapid takeover of the country in August.
Washington chose to refrain from attending the talks due to "technical reasons", but has said it may take part in future rounds.
Russia led the calls for international aid amid worries that any spillover of conflict from Afghanistan could threaten regional stability.
