Russia considers mega-bridge to Sakhalin
Russia's President Vladimr Putin has asked the government to study the option of linking Sakhalin island in the North Pacific Ocean to mainland Russia with a bridge.
Only two months ago, Putin inaugurated the newly built Kerch Strait bridge that connects the Russian mainland with the annexed Crimea peninsular by driving a truck over the 19km long bridge.
The controversial bridge became Europe’s longest and provides di- rect access to Russia’s mainland, bypassing the previous land route that required driving through Ukrainian territory.
Another major bridge to Sakhalin could cost RUB252bn ($4bn) or RUB637bn accounting for the construction of 585mn of adjacent rail tracks, Vedomosti daily said on July 25 citing the unpublished materials of Russian Railways.
Turkmenistan and Afghanistan will officially launch the Rabat- Kashan—Kalay-Nau 110 kV power transmission line by the end of this month, Turkmen state media reported on July 24, citing a video conference held the previous day.
The project is in line with the Turkmen government’s programme aimed at boosting annual electricity exports to 6.9bn kWh by 2020. In June 2016, Turkmenistan’s state-run power supplier Turkmen- ergo signed a contract with Afghan electricity company De Afghani- stan Breshna Sherkat (DABS) for the supply of Turkmen electricity to Afghanistan between 2018 and 2027.
The new power transmission line is set to benefit Turkmenistan’s Bathyz Province along with neighbouring regions of Afghanistan.
The first phase of the construction works on the ringroad around Belgrade officially started on July 24. This covers the area from the bridge on the Sava river near Ostruznicaa to Bubanj Potok, reads the Serbian government statement.
The Belgrade ring road is seen as a strategically important infra- structure project for Serbia because it will connect Corridor X and Corridor XI. Corridor X is the main external connection for Serbia, as well as the shortest transport route between Western and Central Europe, and Southeast Europe. The pan-European transport Corridor XI runs from southwest Belgrade to the border with Montenegro.
