Russia ranks second in the world for digital piracy
Russia is the second biggest consumer of digital pirated content in the world with 20.6bn visits to piracy sites in 2017, according to a report by Muso, a London-based global authority on digital piracy, reports East-West Digital News (EWDN).
The US tops the list with 27.9bn visits to piracy sites last year. The listing also includes such countries as India (17bn), Brazil (12.7bn), Turkey (11.9bn), Japan (10.6bn), France (10.5bn), Indonesia (10.4bn), Germany (10.2bn) and the UK (9.0bn).
“Piracy is more popular than ever,” comments Andy Chatterley, co-founder and CEO at MUSO. According to the study, global piracy showed a 1.6% increase in 2017, with “300.2bn visits to piracy websites across music, TV and film, publishing, and software.”
Magyar Nemzet, the opposition conservative political daily published since 1938, will be closed down on April 11 due to financing problems, staff were told at the editorial meeting on April 10. Peter Ungar, an opposition MP from the green LMP party, said he was in talks on buying the media outlet from its owner Lajos Simicska, who is no longer willing to finance his media empire after the landslide victory of Fidesz in Sunday's general election.
Before the election, there were rumours of Simicska divesting his media empire, which consists of a radio station, a television news channel and a political weekly in addition to its crown jewel, Magyar Nemzet.
Amsterdam-based Russian telecom carrier VEON (formerly VimpelCom), operator of the Beeline brand in CIS member nations, has announced that it has sold its Tajik mobile services subsidiary to ZET Mobile.
VEON, along with Sweden-headquartered TeliaSonera, have been exiting Central Asian markets following involvement in a probe into the bribing of entities connected to Gulnara Karimova, the now disgraced eldest daughter of late Uzbek President Islam Karimov, to win licences to operate 3G and 4G services on the Uzbek mobile market.
VEON’s statement described the decision to exit as driven by the company’s optimisation strategy of its asset portfolio along with withdrawal from markets where the size of its business is small.
