The rail link will stretch 770km from Moscow to Kazan, the capital of the Russian Republic of Tatarstan, with trains expected to reach a speed of 350-400 kilometres per hour. Due for completion in 2020, the project is expected to be executed in two phases. In the first, a stretch between Moscow and Nizhny Novgorod is to be built, and the second will extend the line to Kazan. In November 2016, the Russian government sent the project, which was then estimated to cost RUB1.2 trillion, back for revision.
