4.4.2 Nominal wages dynamics
Real wages in Ukraine grew 9.2% y/y in October, slowing from 9.8% y/y growth in September, the State Statistics Service reported on November 28. The average monthly nominal wage increased to UAH10,727 a month ($432) from UAH10,687 in September, but declined 0.3% m/m in real terms. The leading regions for average monthly wages were the city of Kyiv (UAH15,862), the Ukrainian-controlled Donetsk region (UAH11,952), and the Kyiv region (UAH11,325). The largest nominal average wage growth was in administrative personnel services (23.2% y/y), health care and social assistance (19.5% y/y) and real estate operations (19.2% y/y). Within the industrial sector, the highest nominal wages were in pharmaceuticals (UAH19,798), mining (UAH16,169), and coke and oil production (UAH15,596).
Thanks to the hryvnia appreciation against the dollar, Ukrainian wages are up 35% this year in dollar terms, calculates Oleksiy Blinov, Alfa-Ukraine research head. The hryvnia trades at 25 to the dollar, up 11% from its Jan. 11 levels of 28 to the dollar. Hryvnia wages – in inflation-adjusted terms – are up 10% y/y. According to the State Statistics Service, the average wage in September was UAH10,537, or $432.
