since 2009 and 80 million that will gain by 2030, thanks to our offers and investments.
It is time now for acceleration to ensure no communities are left behind,” says Gilles Vermot Desroches, chief sustainability officer at Schneider Electric.
“With this new fund, a total of EUR20.9mn ($22.9mn) will be dedicated to start-ups that work towards providing access to energy
in Asia Pacific and accelerating economic development,” said Christophe Poline, director of impact investing at Schneider Electric.
GAS-FIRED GENERATION
Excelerate receives notice
to proceed with Philippine
FLNG
On September 20, 2019, Excelerate Energy received the Notice to Proceed (NTP) from the Philippine Department of Energy (DOE) to develop a floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal in the Bay of Batangas per the DOE’s guidelines for “Rules and Regulation Governing the Philippine Natural Gas Industry.”
The project, Luzon LNG, will supply natural gas, sourced from LNG, to existing and new gas-fired power plants in the region that provide electricity to Luzon including
the area of Metro Manila. This abundant and secure source of gas supply will augment the existing gas production from the domestic Malampaya fields, as reserves from these fields begin to deplete.
The proposed project will be located offshore the city of Batangas to minimize the impact to the existing shipping traffic
in the area and coastline. The terminal will utilise Excelerate’s state-of-the-art offshore technology specifically designed to perform in extreme weather conditions, like those
of the Philippines, and has been proven at Excelerate’s operations in the Gulf of Mexico, the North Atlantic, Israel, and most recently, the Bay of Bengal.
Luzon LNG will combine all necessary elements to meet the region’s natural gas requirements including a fully-integrated turnkey floating LNG terminal, arranging the necessary supply of LNG and distribution of natural gas to end-users across Luzon. Excelerate will develop, design, permit, construct, finance, and operate the terminal.

Total Solar completes
construction of three solar
projects in the Philippines
Total Solar is providing solar rooftop systems for three malls operated by Gaisano Capital in Luzon and the Visayas in the Philippines.
With a combined capacity of 1.8MW,
the installations are designed to generate around 2GWh of power, this carbon footprint reduction is equivalent to planting 3,500 trees each year.
The photovoltaic systems are expected to cover over 30% of Gaisano’s power needs and will slash its energy bill by over 15%.
“Total Solar Asia is committed to helping customers drive down both power costs and carbon footprint. We are very pleased to support and enable Gaisano’s commitment to sustainability. Total has a unique ability
to support customers and has a long-term presence in the Philippines. We are proud
to help customers reduce power costs, pollution and climate change impacts for the Philippines,” said Gavin Adda, CEO of Total Solar Asia industrial & commercial.
Total Solar Asia C&I is one of the major, international providers of fully integrated
solar solutions for commercial and industrial customers in Southeast Asia and has more than 400MW of projects in development and operation.
Total begins construction
of third solar power plant in
Japan
France’s Total said it has begun the construction of its third solar power plant in Japan, the Miyagi Osato Solar Park, planned for a peak capacity of 52MW.
The plant is designed to fully meet Japan’s stringent earthquake-resistant building standards. The facility will be equipped with around 116,000 SunPower Maxeon high efficiency solar panels.
The project is to start up in 2021 and will provide clean and reliable electricity to Japanese households, said Total.
“The Miyagi Osato Solar Park is Total’s third and biggest solar plant in Japan, which will allow us to reach a cumulated capacity of over 100 MWp in the country. This project is in line with Total’s commitment to develop renewable production capacities worldwide and in particular in the Japanese market, where we actively pursue our development”, said Julien Pouget, Senior Vice-President Renewables at Total.
The launch Osato Solar Park follows the beginning of operations Total’s two other large-scale solar plants in Japan: Miyako Solar Park (25 MW, 2019) and Nanao Power Plant (27 MW, 2017).
This rapid growth (over 100 MW of cumulative capacity achieved in 2 years) sets Total as one of the most dynamic players in the Japanese solar market.
