Estonia’s Centre party moves closer
to retaining power despite losing election
Estonia’s incumbent Centre party agreed coalition terms with the conservative Fatherland and
the far-right EKRE party on April 6, bolstering
its chances to remain in power despite losing election to main rival, the liberal Reform party.
Following the election on March 3, President Kersti Kaljulaid has tasked the winning Reform party with forming the Baltic state’s new government. The liberals have struggled, however, in securing a coalition that would give them a majority in the 101-seat parliament, the Riigikogu.
Reform can only count on social democrats from the SDE group but talks with Fatherland appear to have gone nowhere. A grand coalition with Centre has also been ruled out while working with EKRE remains a no-go for Reform.
Reform has 34 seats in the Riigikogu. Following departure of one MP, Centre has 25 seats now. EKRE has 19 while Fatherland has 12 and SDE 10. The defector from Centre, Raimond Kaljulaid – the president’s half-brother – decided to become an independent MP.
Centre might secure 56 seats in the parliament in its possible coalition with Fatherland and EKRE – if President Kaljulaid does hand the government-formation mission to the party.
