Ukrainian oligarch Kolomoisky seeks $2bn compensation for nationalisation of PrivatBank
Head of Montenegro’s troubled Atlas Banka sues president, central bank governor
Ihor Kolomoisky, a Ukrainian oligarch and former co-owner of the nation's largest lender PrivatBank, is going to seek $2bn of compensation from the government for what he says was the illegal nationalisation of the lender in late 2016.
"I don't need [to get back] PrivatBank. But there was $2bn in capital there. Let them [the Ukrainian government] return it to me and there will be no problems," Kolomoisky said in an interview with
the Ekonomichna Pravda online outlet on April 8.
The statement followed March's tweet by the US embassy in Ukraine saying that its diplomats "are closely monitoring" developments sur- rounding PrivatBank. "Its nationalisation was a milestone in econom- ic reform and the fight against corruption," the US embassy said on its official Twitter page, without providing any other details.
Dusko Knezevic, head of Montenegro’s troubled Atlas Banka, which is undergoing bankruptcy procedures, has filed a claim against President Milo Djukanovic, central bank governor Radoje Zugic and the bank’s temporary administrator Tanja Teric, accusing them of abuse of office and creating a criminal organisation, broadcaster RTCG reported on April 10.
Knezevic claims that Djukanovic, Zugic and Teric breached several laws and illegally started the bankruptcy procedure. He says that, by launching bankruptcy procedure, the three accused caused
a multi-million damage to the bank’s shareholders.
It was unclear why the claim includes Djukanovic, though Knezevic has previously hit out at the tiny country’s president, accusing Djukanovic of corruption and claiming a warrant was issued for his arrest upon pressure from a clan related to the president.
Greek-owned Alpha Bank Romania has become the first local bank in Romania to issue a mortgage bond with a target volume of €1bn.
It will be the first such bond on the local market, after Law 304/2015 opened the door for this type of instrument. The bank is listing the bonds on both the Luxembourg Stock Exchange and the Bucharest Stock Exchange.
"We are pleased to announce the launch of the first mortgage bond programme in Romania after we launched the first mortgage loan in 2001," Alpha Bank Romania CEO Sergiu Oprescu said.
