Ukraine considers cutting rail connections with Russia
Armenian power company blames summer outages on extreme weather conditions
Ukraine is considering cutting off its rail connections with Russia as part of the on going sanctions regime, the country's Minister of Infrastructure Vladimir Omelyan said on August 6.
Air connections have already been cut, but the government is considering expanding the restrictions, reports RBC.
Omelyan mentioned the topic earlier this year, saying at the time that such a move might be considered because Russia had built a railway branch bypassing Ukraine. "The issue of railway communication with Russia is primarily being considered by Ukrzaliznytsia. I think we will be able to report on the final decision in 2018,” he said at the time.
A subsidiary of Russian Railways told RBC that there is currently only one train traveling through Ukraine, on the Moscow-Chisinau route.
The heatwave in Armenia in July hiked power consumption, which in turn increased the pressure on the country’s electricity distribu- tion networks and led to frequent outages, Electric Networks of Armenia said in a statement.
As a result of abnormally hot weather conditions recorded last month, the volume of electricity consumption increased sharply compared to previous years, the power company said.
Ten repair teams of Electric Networks of Armenia technical employees were working round the clock to eliminate accidents as of August 7.
In the statement, the company, which is owned by Russia’s Tashir group, outlined its investment plans aimed at avoiding similar situations in the future. Chief among these is a $900mn investment programme running until 2028, with the primary goal of improving the quality of electricity distribution.
Moldova’s government on August 8 appointed a new contractor for the rehabilitation works on the 85 km Chisinau-Giurgiulesti speedway under a €29.3mn contract financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).
“[W]e are now starting to rehabilitate the road that connects Chisinau with all the countries of the Black Sea basin. All the south of the country is looking forward to see the project completed," Minister of Economy Chiril Gaburici said at the ceremony.
The route links the capital city Chisinau, surrounded by a highly industri- alised region, to the country’s main port on the Danube at Giurgiulesti.
