Reflecting the importance of food, Ukraine’s overall exports to the EU increased by only 7%, during January-October, compared to the same period in 2018, reports Ukraine’s State Statistics Service
Poultry is one of Ukraine’s fastest growing major exports, increasing last year by 26% y/y, to 414,490 tons, reports the State Customs Service. In dollar terms, exports were up by 14.2%, to $579mn. Imports of poultry to Ukraine were less than 10% of exports.
Ukraine’s poultry exports to the EU may remain suspended for one month on virus fears, an industry analyst tells Interfax-Ukraine. Tests on a dead chicken at a poultry farm on Vinnytsia in mid January revealed the cause of death to be avian influenza type A - the first case detected in Ukraine in three years. In response, poultry farms in the area are under quarantine and 21,000 chickens have been destroyed. On January 23, the EU banned imports of poultry from Ukraine. The ban does not affect exports of eggs.
Ukraine was the world’s sixth largest wheat exporter in 2018. The ranking was: Russia - $8.4bn (20.5% of total wheat exports); Canada - $5.7bn (13.8%); US - $5.5bn (13.2%); France - $4.1bn (10%); Australia - $3.1bn (7.5%); Ukraine - $3bn (7.3%).
Ukraine’s grain exports will be up 8% to 54mn tons, the second record year in a row, forecasts the Economic Development, Trade and Agriculture Ministry. During the first half of the current 2019/2020 marketing year, Ukraine’s exports were up 32%, to 32mn tons. Measured in million tonnes, exports were: wheat --15.1; corn - 12.8; and barley 3.8. The 2019 harvest was up 7%, to 75mn tons. With domestic consumption virtually flat, all harvest increases are exported.
Ukraine exported 248 tons of snails to the EU market from January to September, triple the rate for 2018. Over the last two years, the number of Ukrainian snail producers certified to export to the EU has tripled, to 17.
Ukraine has won the right to export fresh chicken eggs to Japan, reports the country's state service on food safety and consumer protection. Ukraine is among Europe’s egg producers, increasing output by 3.5% to 15.5bn eggs in January-November. During that period, Ukraine exported $104mn worth of eggs, up 22% y/y. In volume, Ukraine exported 129,000 tons of eggs, up 32% y/y.
Despite farmer complaints about the railroad, Ukrzaliznytsia transported 40mn tons of grain last year, 20% more than 2018 and an absolute record for the three decades since Independence. Yevhen Kravtsov, CEO of the state railroad, writes on Facebook that the increase is due to better coordination with farmers and logistics companies and faster turnarounds of UZ’s 28,000-grain hopper cars.
During the first half of the grain marketing year, Ukraine increased its grain exports 34% y/y, to 31.1mn tons, reports the Economy, Trade, and Agriculture Ministry. Export leaders for the July-December period were: wheat: 15mn tons, corn 12mn tons, rye 5mn tons, and barley 3.7mn tons. Ukraine harvested a record 75.2mn tons of grain this year, up 7% over last year.
