PGS data supports ongoing Congo Basin licensing
PGS data from the offshore Congo coastal basin supports the Republic of Congo “open door” policy for exploration and production oppor- tunities. The Republic of Congo has started an ongoing promotion of all open blocks, including five blocks in the interior Cuvette basin and 10 blocks in the Congo coastal basin. Seven coastal basin blocks are offshore and extensively covered by PGS data.
In 2019, SNPC and PGS reprocessed a large volume of seismic data within the offshore area of the Congo coastal basin, using a modern reprocessing flow to produce a single merged dataset – Congo MegaSurveyPlus, significantly upgrading the previous regional coverage. The imaging results are striking and have revitalised the entire basin area with an improved and con- sistent regional geological perspective.
This reprocessed 3D dataset is tied to wells, to allow a regional interpretation and identifi- cation of prospects, plays and migration paths, reducing the technical risks of Congo Shelf exploration.
The coastal basin area presents pre-salt plays and rift structures in prolific shallow-water acre- age, close to existing infrastructure. Mesozoic salt basins with associated fields and discover- ies extend across this area to the present-day onshore.
The Congo MegaSurveyPlus comprises 12 original 3D surveys, all reprocessed from field
data using the latest broadband processing tech- niques, to deliver PSDM and prestack volumes and clearer images. Increased bandwidth and signal fidelity ensure better velocity models and final images that are more reliable.
SNPC and PGS are planning to acquire a new regional MC3D survey over the shallow-water Congo Shelf area “Peu Profund” to provide extensive new seismic data coverage over this highly prospective and producing area. “The new data will enhance pre-salt imaging and improve our knowledge of the post-salt opportu- nities, unlocking plays and prospects not imaged fully by the existing data,” says Christine Roche, NV Manager Africa at PGS.
SNPC and PGS are planning to acquire a new MC3D survey on the Congo Shelf in 2020, to expand and upgrade our extensive coverage over this prospective and productive region. The new data will enhance pre-salt imaging and improve our knowledge of the post-salt opportunities, unlocking new plays and prospects.

Shearwater GeoServices
starts seismic programme
offshore South Africa
Africa Energy, an oil and gas company with exploration assets offshore South Africa and Namibia, has announced the start of new marine seismic acquisition programs on Block 11B/12B offshore South Africa. The 2D seismic pro- gramme has now commenced, and the 3D seis- mic survey is expected to begin later this month.
Garrett Soden, Africa Energy’s President and CEO, commented: “The start of the new seis- mic surveys on Block 11B/12B offshore South Africa represents the beginning of a very active period for our company. Seismic operations will continue through April 2020 alongside the next drilling campaign, which is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2020 with the spud of the Luiperd well. The joint venture plans to keep the rig on Block 11B/12B for almost a year and drill up to three exploration wells. We congratulate the operator, Total, for expediting this ambitious exploration program, and we look forward to rig mobilisation in January.”
Shearwater GeoServices is acquiring an ini- tial program of 3,650 km of 2D seismic using the multi-purpose vessel SW Cook with fast-track processing onboard. The 2D seismic programme will attempt to define the lead and prospect inventory of the large under-explored area in Block 11B/12B to the east of the Paddavissie prospects.
Petroleum Geo-Services (PGS) is acquiring 2,200 square km of 3D seismic using the PGS Apollo seismic vessel. In this second phase of 3D seismic work on the block, the joint venture plans to cover the remainder of the Paddavissie Fairway to better delineate the prospects and leads identified on the previous 2D and 3D data.
In March and April 2019, Polarcus acquired 570 square km of 3D seismic using the Polarcus Asima vessel. The first phase of 3D seismic cov- ered the Brulpadda discovery and the Luiperd prospect. The joint venture received the prelim- inary, fast-track 3D results in August 2019, and we expect to receive the fully processed 3D seis- mic dataset by January 2020.
