Mustafayev said that in the near future, cooperation in the energy sector can be expanded between Azerbaijan and Iran, including joint oil and gas projects. Iran also plans to export 1,400 cars to Azerbaijan this year, which is 1,000 or 3.5 times more than last year according to Qassemi. "In the past, transit was comfortable and normal, but recently we have witnessed certain difficulties in terms of fees and transportation costs," he said.
It should be reminded that within the framework of the visit of Mustafayev to Iran, a meeting of the Joint Iranian-Azerbaijani Economic Commission was held. Azerbaijani and Iranian energy officials are also planning to meet soon. According to Qassemi, the railway connection from Nakhchivan to Mashhad may be resumed soon. The construction of a 100 meter bridge on the Iranian-Azerbaijani border and the commissioning of the Rasht-Astara railway section are the main issues that will be discussed during the visit of the Azerbaijani delegation to Iran.
"Our Azerbaijani friends have invested in the construction of a terminal in the Iranian city of Astara, it has been partially completed. Discussions will be held on the completion of the terminal construction. We will also hold a meeting in the Azerbaijani Astara, and put on the agenda the project of the Nakhchivan-Mashhad railway. Cooperation in the field of road transport and road transport transit is one of the most important topics of negotiations within the framework of this commission," Qassemi said.
The high-speed train Nakhchivan-Mashhad-Nakhchivan was launched on December 29, 2016, and almost a year later, for technical reasons, its activity was temporarily suspended. The trade turnover between Azerbaijan and Iran increased by 21.9% in 9M21 compared to the same period in 2020 and amounted to $293mn.
