As of end-April, the mobile phone penetration rate increased to 165.52%.
According to EKIP, Crnogorski Telekom, which is a unit of Deutsche Telecom, held a 74.3% share of the fixed telephony market. The local arm of Tel- ekom Srbija, M:tel, which provides fixed telephony via WiMAX technology, had 18.16%, and the two new players on the fixed-line telephony market
— Telemach and Telenor (which was acquired by Czech investment group PPF in March 2018 as part of Telenor’s decision to sell its business in CEE) — had 6.62% and 0.92% shares respectively.
Households accounted for 86.61% of all fixed-line users at end-April and the balance was accounted for by the business sector.
Mobile phone penetration in Montenegro up to 165.52% at end-April
Montenegro's mobile phone penetration rate increased by 3.2pp y/y to 165.52% at end-April, according to data from the telecommunications agency (EKIP). The total number of subscribers was up by 2% y/y to around 1.03mn.
Montenegro’s high mobile penetration rate is partly due to the large number of tourists (in comparison to its tiny population) that visit the country.
In April, the subscriber base of Norway's Telenor, Montenegro's leading operator, rose 0.5% y/y
to 362,853. The company had a market share of 35.36% at end-April, down from 35.87% a year earlier.
The number of subscribers of the second largest telco in the country, T-Mobile (part of Crnogorski Telekom), went down 0.7% y/y to 351,205. The company’s market share dropped to 34.22% from 35.13% in April 2017.
The newest player on the market, M:Tel, gained both subscribers and market share. The company’s customers increased by 7% y/y to 312,228 at end-April, while its market share rose to 30.42% from 29% a year earlier.
Pre-paid customers accounted for 47.34% of all users.
