some 45 kilometres southwest of Alexandria, Egypt. e plant is owned and operated by the National Electricity Technology company, Kahraba, a part of the Egypt Kuwait Holdings (EKH) Group.
Kahraba is one of the largest private electricity service providers in Egypt. e order with Wärtsilä was placed in June 2019.
e engineering and equipment (EEQ) contract is for two Wärtsilä 34SG engines running on natural gas fuel. e engines will have a combined output of 19MW and will increase the plant’s capacity by two thirds.
 is additional utility grid capacity
is needed to support the area’s growing industrial base. e existing plant runs on three Wärtsilä 34SG engines.
“ e local industries impose increasing demand on power capacity. e Wärtsilä engines will help alleviate this situation and will enable us to deliver a reliable electricity supply to our customers, thus supporting industrial growth in the area. To extend the power plant with proven Wärtsilä design was a natural choice” says Ahmed Nassr-Eldin Khaled, Deputy Technical General Manager, Kahraba.
“Our smart power generation technology will provide added exibility, as well as capacity to the local grid here. Furthermore, the low noise speci cation for the radiators, plus the fact that the engines will operate
on domestic natural gas, will enhance the plant’s environmental footprint,” says Magnus Miemois, Regional Director, Wärtsilä Energy Business.
e new equipment will be delivered to the site in January 2020, and the extended facility is expected to become operational towards the end of that year. EKH Group also operates an older plant with Wärtsilä engines.

FAS Energy, Egypt partner on
$500mn waste-to-energy
plant deal
FAS Energy, a subsidiary of Saudi Arabia’s Fawaz Abdulaziz Alhokair Co, has signed
a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Egyptian New Urban Communities Authority (NUCA) to develop a waste-to- energy project.
A statement released on July 30 said that under the deal, the 100-MW power plant would require an investment of over $500mn for its construction.
e project will serve cities a liated to the NUCA in east Cairo, including New Cairo, El Shorouk, Badr City, and the 10th of Ramadan.
FAS will also carry out the technical, environmental, and nancial studies required for the project.
is is the second power generation project to be carried out by FAS in Egypt a er the 50- MW Benban Solar Park in Aswan. e solar park, which cost around $100mn to develop, entered service earlier this year.

Tanzania launches construction of mega HPP
Tanzanian President John Magufuli on July 26 o cially inaugurated the construction of the Ru ji mega hydropower plant (HPP) at Stiegler’s Gorge in the Selous Game Reserve. is comes as the country’s government attempts to improve electricity supply
in order to boost a drive towards greater industrialisation. e $3bn project is being jointly developed by two Egyptian companies – Arab Contractors and El Sewedy Electric.
“ is is the rst day in the economic liberation of Tanzania. It’s a unique and historic day,” Magufuli said at a ceremony to lay the foundation stone for the project. “ e investment and generation costs for the Ru ji project are cheaper than any other alternative source of electricity. Our manufacturing factories cannot be competitive if the cost electricity remains high,” he said.
e 2,115-MW Ru ji project is expected to more than double Tanzania’s current power generation capacity of around 1,600 MW. It is expected to enter service in mid-2022.
TRANSMISSION
El-Sewedy to complete Benban-Naga Hammadi transmission line by September
El Sewedy Electric is expected to bring a 500kV power line covering a distance of 185 km online in September.
Sources in the Egyptian Ministry of Electricity told Daily News Egypt that El Sewedy Electric was building the line to connect Benban 3 to Naga Hammadi. e line will transmit electricity produced from solar energy feed-in tari (FiT) projects in Aswan. e line is currently 88% complete.
e sources added that the Upper Egypt Electricity Distribution Co. had brought online a power transformer, also with a capacity of 500kV.
e lines and electrical cables form part of the Ministry of Electricity’s expansion plan, which is aimed at transmitting power without disruptions and strengthening the national electricity network to accommodate loads.
