On December 7 Russia's Ministry of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media announced that it had prepared and submitted to the Russian government a preliminary rating of domestic applications and programs to be pre-installed on new devices sold in Russia. According to Kommersant, the preliminary rating includes 29 applications across 12 categories, with five YNDX products and 13 MAIL products making the cut. Four of YNDX’s products lead in their categories (its browser, search engine, map service and cloud storage service), while MAIL has six apps that are category leaders (its email service, ICQ messenger, Marusya voice assistant, news aggregator, streaming service OK Live and social network VK). The rating is based on the number of users of each service over the past year, and the ministry plans to update the rating annually. At the same time, the pre-installation law will not take effect until 1 April 2021, according to Interfax. As a reminder, the initial implementation date of 1 July was moved to 1 January 2021 due to COVID-19. In mid-November, the Economic Policy Committee postponed it again, this time until 1 March 2021.
Ukraine’s IT sector grew by 20% in 2020, fuelled by 4,000 IT companies in the market, according to a new report: “Ukraine: The Country that Codes.” The 56-page industry overview prepared by software developer N-iX says the number of IT workers in Ukraine doubled in five years, hitting 200,000 today.
The number of IT companies and IT workers in Lviv increased by 7% in 2020, compared to the previous year, according IT Research 5.0, a study conducted by Fama research agency for Lviv’s IT Cluster. There are now 492 IT companies in Lviv, employing 26,500 people. The average monthly salary of an IT specialist in Lviv is $2,080, about four times Ukraine’s average salary for all sectors.
