Uzbekistan to allocate $422mn to elevated railway system construction
Albania to go ahead with first road toll despite protests
Uzbekistan will spend $422mn on the construction of an elevated railway system in the capital city of Tashkent, UzDaily news agency reported on June 5.
The construction of the 52.1 km-long system was launched last October as part of the programme for the “development and mod- ernisation of transport and the communication system” decreed earlier last year by Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. The elevat- ed railway will be a welcome addition to improving public transit in the city of 2.4mn. The capital is home to the longest subway system in Central Asia - the 36.2 km-long Tashkent Metro.
The newly approved budget sees the Uzbek Fund for Reconstruc- tion and Development spending $140mn on the railway project with rest of the funding coming from the state budget and “centralised investment”, according to the report.
Albania will go ahead and introduce the first road toll in the country, but probably with lower fees than originally planned, after the move was criticised by local citizens, the opposition and Kosovan busi- nesspeople.
The Durres-Kukes motorway, known as the National Road, connects Albania’s biggest Adriatic port of Durres with the northern city of Kukes, and leads to the Morine border crossing with Kosovo, near Kukes.
The concessionaire has rebuilt and constructed more toll booths after angry protestors demolished most of the infrastructure during the violent protest which took place at the end of March against the introduction of the toll system.
On June 1, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko opened a completely reconstructed 152m bridge on the territory of Moldova, part of the Odessa-Reni M15 highway, newsmaker.md reported. The bridge was closed in 2015 for repairs.
The bridge was built in the area of the Moldovan village of Palanka, which is under the jurisdiction of Moldova, but the bridge itself,
as well as the section of the road and the land below it, are the property of Ukraine.
For Ukraine, the bridge is of strategic importance. It connects
nine southern districts, including several large cities like Belgorod- Dnestrovsky, Izmail, Tatarbunary, Reni, Bolgrad, Vilkovo, Kiliya,
with Odessa and Kiev through the Dniester River.
