Russian, Iranian and Kyrgyz railway CEOs discuss 7,200 km corridor ambitions
Turkey’s Tasyapi starts preparations for construction of Belgrade-Sarajevo motorway
The heads of the Russian, Iranian and Kyrgyz national railway companies met on the sidelines of the 70th meeting of the Coun- cil for Rail Transport of the Commonwealth Member States in Helsinki to discuss the growing Eurasian rail connectivity project known as the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), Russian Railways said in a May 15 press release.
INSTC, to stretch over 7,200 kilometres, is to eventually connect India to northern Europe using a corridor running through Iran, Azerbaijan and Russia. Goods departing western India would first be shipped across the Indian Ocean to Iran’s only oceanic port, Chabahar, which is being jointly developed by New Delhi and Tehran.
Turkey’s Tasyapi has started preparatory works for the construction of the Belgrade-Sarajevo motorway, eKapija reported on May 13.
In December, Serbia granted Tasyapi a contract for the construc- tion of the first stretch of the motorway, which will link the capi- tals of Serbia and Bosnia. The project is worth €250mn.
Tasyapi started preparing the ground at Sremska Raca near Sremska Mitrovica, where 23 km of the motorway linking Serbia with Bosnia's Serb-dominated Republika Srpska will be built.
The construction of the highway is aimed at creating a better con- nection between the two countries and will enable faster regional development. Serbia will invest €1.05bn in the construction of its part of the motorway. The total cost of the motorway is estimated at €3bn.
The municipality of Tbilisi has announced that ILF Consulting Engineers Austria has won a contract to develop an above- ground metro line to link Samgori district to the capital’s airport by converting an existing line for urban transport purposes. The contract is worth GEL 12.6mn (€4.7mn).
There will be seven stations along the Samgori-Lilo-Airport line, which will be commissioned gradually over the next three years. The daily ridership is expected to be around 200,000 people.
The Austrian company is to also draft a feasibility study with technical and economic research for another line running toward Rustavi, also starting from Samgori.
