 So far, though, this approach has not enjoyed much success.
Instead, Pemex has found that some of its domestic contractors do not have the skills, the technology or the equipment to meet their
obligations. It has also put some local service providers in a di cult position by failing to pay them on time, thereby leaving them unable to obtain the resources they need to execute their contracts. ™
Eni, partners find oil at Saasken prospect offshore Mexico
ITALY’S Eni and its partners have reported the discovery of new crude oil reserves at Saasken, a prospect within Block 10 o shore Mexico.
In a statement dated February 17, Eni said the group found oil in the Saasken-1 NFW well. Preliminary results from the well, which was drilled in the Cuenca Salina area of the Sureste Basin, show that the prospect may hold 200- 300mn barrels of oil in place (OIP), it said.
“Saasken-1 discovered 80 metres of net pay of good-quality oil in the Lower Pliocene and Upper Miocene sequences,” Eni noted. “ e res- ervoirs show excellent petrophysical properties. An intensive data collection has been carried out on the well, and the data acquired indicate a production capacity for the well of more than 10,000 barrels of oil per day.”
is indicates that Block 10 may be commer- cially viable, the statement said. It explained that it might be able to develop Saasken in tandem with several other nearby prospects. Eni did not name these prospects, but it said it would work with its partners “to appraise the discovery and to exploit nearby synergies in order to start the studies for commercial development.”
e Italian company described Saasken-1 NFW as its sixth successful exploration well in the Sureste Basin. It said it had used the Valaris 8505 semi-submersible rig to sink the well at a site 65 km from the shore in 340-metre-deep

water. Saasken-1 NFW reached a total depth of 3,830 metres, it added.
Equity in the Block 10 project is divided between Eni, the operator, with a 65% stake; Lukoil (Russia), with 20%, and Capricorn Energy (Mexico), with 15%. e Italian com- pany is currently participating in the exploration and development of eight blocks in the Sureste Basin o shore southern Mexico. It is serving as operator at six of these blocks.™
