    4.5.3 Retail sector dynamics
                  Payment card spending in Turkey grew by 17% in 2020 to Turkish lira (TRY) 1.15 trillion ($155bn), according to Interbank Card Center (BKM) data released on February 2.
The number of credit cards increased by 8% to 75.7mn in 2020, while the number of debit cards and prepaid cards expanded by 13% to 188.1mn. Turkey was the leading country in Europe in card ownership.
The share of card payments in total household expenditures has reached 41%. Internet card payments last year increased by 37% to TRY260bn.
The number of contactless cards in Turkey in 2020 reached 45 million. The number of contactless payments increased by 2.5-fold to hit 1.73bn. Two out of every five in-store card payments were made with a contactless card.
Payments with credit cards and debit cards in Turkey rose by 16% y/y to TRY103bn (€12bn) in January.
A total of 77mn credit cards (up 9% y/y) and 140mn debit cards (up 5% y/) were in use in January.
Payments with credit cards amounted to TRY86bn. That marked a 13% y/y increase. Payments with debit cards stood at TRY16bn. Transactions with prepaid cards totalled TRY1.6bn.
Purchases of electronic goods with credit and other cards grew 65% y/y to TRY7.8bn in January. Card holders’ spending on construction materials expanded 50% y/y to TRY4.5bn. Supermarket and food spending rose by 42% y/y to TRY32bn.
Turkey's auto sales gained 60% y/y in January.
Gasoline sales in Turkey declined by 3.2% in 2020 to 3.1mn m3. Diesel sales, on the other hand, dropped only 0.3% in 2020 to 29.6mn m3. Autogas (automotive LPG) sales were down 9% y/y to 2.98mn tonnes.
Tupras’ sales fell 16% y/y to 25mn tonnes in 2020.
