Of the vehicles sold in January, 27,226, or 62%, were imports. In 2020, Turkey’s auto production declined by 11% y/y to 1.3mn units while imports jumped 54% y/y to 427,028.
The government increased the special consumption tax on electric cars to between 330% and 400%. The price of an electric car sold previously in Turkey for Turkish lira (TRY) 500,000 (€58,000) thus rose to TRY696,000, for instance.
In 2020, 844 electric cars and 22,300 hybrid vehicles were sold on the local market, accounting for 3.2% of all vehicles sold in Turkey. In 2019, 222 electric cars and 12,000 hybrid vehicles were sold in the country.
