Revenues from steel product shipments to foreign markets stood at $8.6bn, pointing to a 11% drop from 2019.
The country’s steel imports hit 12.5mn tonnes in 2020, up 4.5% y/y, while they declined 2.9% in value to $7.7bn.
Exports surprised with a robust 22% y/y gain in December alone, hitting $983mn.
Local consumption of steel products rose nearly 13% in 2020 to 29.4mn tonnes thanks to a recovery in the housing market. But consumption dropped 10.3% y/y to 2.4mn tonnes in December.
The 35.8mn tonnes of production made Turkey Europe’s largest producer of steel last year, placing it very slightly ahead of Germany, while the country ranked seventh in the world.
Erdemir’s share in Turkey’s overall steel production declined in 2020.
