Senex reports major Surat Basin gas reserves increase
PROJECTS & COMPANIES
AUSTRALIAN junior Senex Energy has reported a 21% increase in its proved and prob- able (2P) natural gas reserves in its Surat Basin projects following an independent assessment of its estimates.
e company said on July 14 that 2P reserves at its wholly owned assets had increased to 739 PJ (19.25bn cubic metres). e Atlas project saw reserves expand by 62% to 234 PJ (6.1 bcm), Roma North’s reserves climbed by 10% to 283 PJ and the Western Surat acreage saw a 6% increase to 222 PJ (5.78 bcm).
Senex attributed the jump at Atlas to better than expected drilling results from a 45-well campaign, strong initial production since the field came online in December 2019 and appraisal drilling in the block’s southeast that had showed high permeabil- ity on trend with current production in the licence’s north-west.
Roma North’s reserve increase was said to be the result of the eld’s continued strong
production coupled with the gas processing facility’s excellent performance. Senex said throughput had been debottlenecked to 18 TJ (469,000 cubic metres) per day from 16 TJ (417,000 cubic metres) per day.
Of the Western Surat acreage, the company said there was material running room for further appraisal and development activity in the block.
Commenting on the upgrade, Senex man- aging director and CEO Ian Davies said: “ nancial year 2019-2020 was a year focused on successful execution of our AUD400mn [$278.8mn] Surat Basin developments, which delivered outstanding project delivery per- formance, continued gas production out- performance and now material upgrades in booked natural gas reserves.”
Daily production from both Atlas and Roma North has increased from around 7 TJ (182,300 cubic metres) per day at the start of the nancial year to more than 37 TJ (964,000 cubic metres) per day currently. Senex said its assets were rapidly heading towards an initial production target of 48 TJ (1.25mn cubic metres) per day. e company added that following the reserves upgrade, its Surat Basin assets could produce gas for more than 40 years at this target rate.
