Iran provides one-third of Iraq’s gas supplies, despite the fact that the Iranian companies that the Iraqis import from are sanctioned by the US.
Official data shows that Iraq’s generation capacity stands at around 16,000 MW, not covering demand for 24-30,000 MW to keep the lights on.
“The waiver ensures that Iraq is able to meet its short-term energy needs while it takes steps to reduce its dependence on Iranian energy imports,” a US State Department official said.
“We believe it is possible within the 60 days for the government of Iraq to take meaningful actions to promote energy self-sufficiency...,” he said, without specifying what those actions should be.

Turkey’s auto exports to Iran drop 15% y/y in Jan-July
Vehicle manufacturers in Iran recorded a 23.4% y/y increase in production in the first half of the 2020/2021 Persian calendar year (March 20-September 21), ILNA reported on September 30.
Car buyers in Iran plainly have limited options when it comes to affordable cars, with Peugeots and Renaults the bigger names among the well-known global auto brands that are available. Due to constraints on the auto industry in Iran, buyers must purchase their car as a pre-order and wait several months for their vehicle to arrive.
Some, 468,699 vehicles were reportedly manufactured during the first half.
Of those, 425,925 were passenger cars, with the category seeing growth of 21.9% y/y.
Also, 39,519 lorries and light trucks were produced in Iran during the six months.
Turkey’s auto exports to Iran decreased by 15.12% y/y in January to July and had a value of $45.8mn, Trend has reported, citing the Turkish Ministry of Trade.
Re-exports of cars from Turkey to Iran include Volkswagen, Hyundai and Kia models that remain available on the Iranian market via third party dealerships, despite pressure from the US to cease sales to the Islamic Republic.
In July alone, auto exports from Turkey to Iran decreased by 19.09% y/y and had a value of $11.2mn.
Also in July, Turkey exported $2.2bn worth of cars to global markets, marking a decline of 24.1% y/y.
Auto exports in July accounted for 14.7% of Turkey’s total exports.

Iran hopes October will bring introduction of “flying taxis” for remote regions
Iran hopes to this month introduce “flying taxis” for remote regions, according to local news agencies.
Tehran continues to deregulate the Iranian aviation industry. Several new air operators have arrived on the market in recent years, but an air taxi operator is yet to launch.
The secretary of the Space Technology and Intelligent Transportation Development Headquarters of Vice President for Science and Technology Manouchehr Manteqi announced that the country hopes to see its first flying taxis in the sky this month, following months of speculation.
He said flying taxi services would help to deliver "economic prosperity" by connecting regions to the benefit of low-population areas in less prosperous
