meet the rising demand. The share of the private sector in electricity generation rose from 32% in 2002 to 75% by the end of 2018,” the report said.
From 2002 to 2018, gross investment in electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning production and distribution amounted to $110bn. In addition, $10bn was invested in improving energy efficiency.
Investments in renewable energy, including hydropower, accounted for 53% of the $75bn invested in power generation capacity in the same period.
“The share of borrowing in renewable energy investments is estimated to be between 65%and 70%, slightly above the average of 60%-65% in the energy sector in general,” the report said.
The report underlined that total energy sector outstanding loans currently stood at around $57.4bn and, of this total, $45bn consisted of medium- to long-term loans.
Turkey's wind power capacity reached a total of 7,615 MW as additional generation facilities with 246 MW of capacity came online in the first eight months of the year, according data from the TUREB wind energy association.
The country's industrial Marmara and western Aegean regions account for some 72% of entire installed capacity while the shares of the Mediterranean region and other Anatolian provinces are 13% and 10%, respectively.
Plants located in the Aegean province of Izmir alone account for 10.2% of the installed capacity.
According to the TUREB report, 183 wind power plants are in existence in Turkey while construction work for another 17, with a total capacity of 619MW, is under way.
Wind power plants met some 8% of the country's electricity demand in the first quarter of the year but their contribution declined slightly in the following months due to seasonal factors, the business group said.
The wind power share in Turkey's overall energy generation has tripled over the past seven years, said Hakan Yildirim, head of TUREB.
Polat Enerji is the largest player on the market with 567MW of installed wind power capacity, followed by Demirer Enerji with 506MW. Guris is the third largest with 481MW.
The biggest supplier of wind plant turbines is Nordex, with a market share of 27%. Vestas holds 21% while Enercon’s market share is 18.4%. GE is the fourth largest player in wind plant turbine supplies with a 16.2% share.
Total wind power installed capacity was only 364MW back in 2008. It passed the 1,000MW landmark in 2010.
Last year, Turkey added 497MW to its wind power capacity. In 2017, the addition amounted to 766MW and 1,388MW was added the year before that.
